Conscious Sedation

The pain treatment staff has suggested for you to receive sedation n during your procedure. This determination is made on an individual basis. Your medical condition, tolerance, and specific request are considered as well as procedure specificity.

Our goal is to have your experience be as pleasant as possible. Sedation is given for your comfort. Relaxation music will be audible as it assists you to reach your highest relaxation point.

The sedation is administered intravenously (IV). This will occur in the procedure room minutes prior to the procedure. The registered nurse will give the medication in collaboration with the physician. The amount of medication varies on the above-mentioned considerations.

You may or may not hear what is going on in the room or be aware of the procedure being performed, if you have any concerns you can voice them at anytime. You will be monitored during and after the procedure in order to identify side effects and intercede as necessary. It is important to monitor you so we can asses the medication effectiveness and intercede before complications occur.

One of the most common medications utilized is VERSED (midazolam hydrochloride). It is classified as an anti-anxiety. Versed is similar to Valium and has an amnesic effect. This means you may not recall any or parts of the procedure; the effects are specific to the individual. Versed is short acting, on average it takes as little as a couple of minutes to feel it's effects and lasts about 30 min. It takes 2-4 hours for your body to rid this medication.

Another common medication we use is fentanyl citrate. It is classified as an analgesic. It is a strong pain reliever. On average it is effective in one - two minutes its effects can be present for a few minutes. Its duration is about an hour. You may receive one or both of these medications.

ou will rest in the recovery area for about 30-60 min. We will ask you to eat and drink as desired. If you specific music you would like to listen to feel free to either bring your headset or we can play a CD on our system.
You should not consume any food or drink for 6 hours prior to your procedure. You should take your regular medications with a sip of water (this includes pain medications.) You may not drive for 24 hours. YOU MUST HAVE AN ESCORT ACCOMPANY YOU HOME, THIS IS MANDATORY. If you do not have an escort your procedure will be rescheduled.
